happy tummy, happy life

Let’s talk about something super trendy these days (and for good reason): gut health! Yep, we’re diving deep into the world of probiotics, good bacteria, and making sure your tummies are as happy as our kids when they find a new snack in the pantry.

Now, I know we’ve all got enough on our plates (literally and figuratively), but trust me, keeping your gut in check is the secret sauce to staying energized and keeping the chaos in balance.

The gut is the command center of your body. It's out there calling the shots on everything - digestion, immune system, mood, you name it, And when your gut’s unhappy, oh boy, do you feel it. Imagine your toddler on their worst day…yeah, like that. Did you know your gut is home to trillions of tiny bacteria, also known as gut flora?

These microorganisms do much more than help with digestion, they play a huge role in keeping us healthy.

What do these little buggers do?

  1. PROTECT FROM INVADERS: They protect your gut from invading “bad” bacteria. By maintaining a good balance of good bacteria, your gut can prevent harmful bacteria from taking over. If bad bacteria take over, then the intestinal wall becomes damaged.

  2. MAINTAIN THE INTEGRITY OF YOUR GUT WALL: A healthy gut wall is designed to be a barrier that keeps things inside your digestive tract. When that gut wall is strong, think of it like a sturdy fence protecting your body from all the things you don’t want getting in, like toxins, harmful bacteria, and yes, even allergy triggers.

When that wall gets a little leak, that is when a leaky gut appears.  The lining of your intestinal wall becomes weak, allowing harmful substances like toxins, bacteria, and large undigested food pieces to pass through to your bloodstream.

  3. AID IN THE DIGESTIONS OF FOOD AND ABSORBS NUTRIENTS: Gut bacteria help break down complex carbohydrates, fiber, and many other nutrients, making them easier to absorb.

  4. AID IN DETOXIFICATION: These little buggers help break down toxins and assist in removing them from the body.

  5. PRODUCE SOME B VITAMINS, VITAMIN K, AND SEROTONIN: As they break down your food, they produce vital B vitamins, which are vital for brain healthy and energy! Vitamin K is synthesize vitamin K2, which is used for bone health and blood clotting. Lastly, a large amount of serotonin is produced in the gut. This happy little molecule contributes to mood regulation, making your gut not just a digestive powerhouse but also a key player in your overall happiness!

  6. MODULATE IMMUNE SYSTEM: They protect against infections and harmful bacteria.

Let me introduce you to my gut’s besties

Because I am a mom I am all about easy ways to get the good stuff into my system.

YOGURT: The ultimate “mom snack” that also keeps those healthy bacteria rolling in. Add some honey, and it’s practically a dessert, right? Check out this delicious recipe. Parfait Recipe

KEFIR: Imagine yogurt on a caffeine rush - this stuff is fermented and packed with even more probiotics. Think of it as the gut’s version of a mommy pick-me-up. You can make your own or buy it in the store - as always look for sugar-free versions.

KIMCHI + SAUERKRAUT: Alright, I am not saying that your kids will love this, but it can add a nice kick to a taco or sandwich.

PICKLES: This is an easy one for most. Look for the refrigerated versions that are naturally fermented. Slice them up and add to your burger or enjoy them whole.

FERMENTED VEGGIES: It’s relatively easy to ferment your own veggies: green peppers, red peppers, carrots. You can even make your own fermented salsa.

KOMBUCHA: Sipping on one of these on my way home from the grocery store is like giving yourself a little pat on the back for adulting like a pro.

PROBIOTIC SUPPLEMENTS: So, here's the deal. Sometimes life (and my not-so-perfect diet choices) get in the way and this throws my gut out of whack. Maybe it is 3:00 and I just really wanted a packet or two of those gummies in my pantry. Enter probiotic supplements - your gut’s bestie in a bottle. Just make sure you choose one with no added sugars (be careful of the gummy versions).

And, there’s more!

Of course, when it comes to healing your gut, there’s a whole squad of strategies, and probiotics are just one member of the team!
