Adding herbs into your diet is a delicious and easy way to increase micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) into your diet. Herbs are plants or plant parts and are known to enhance food and support wellness. Our bodies cannot produce most vitamins and minerals so we need to obtain them from our food. Because the micronutrients in herbs are so concentrated, you only need a small amount to gain benefit. In general, herbs are known for being high in antioxidants, antimicrobial, as well as supportive of the digestive and immune system. In addition, they are known to support your health by reducing oxidative stress and enhance blood sugar balance.

Basil is a popular herb, described as being sweet and pungent, and is high in Vitamin A, C, K, and Selenium.  Basil is known to support digestive as it can help ease stomach pain and cramping as well as prevent and relieve nausea and vomiting.  It has also shown in studies to support the nervous system and has shown to be effective in relieving depression and anxiety. You can buy pre-made pesto at the store, however, most are made with unhealthy oils and added preservatives.  It is so easy to make your own at home (and super easy to grow your own!).  Right now buy bunches of basil at your local farmer’s market and whip up some easy pesto. Enjoy it now on sandwiches and pasta and freeze some for the winter months. Adding herbs to dressings, vinaigrette, marinades and soups are an easy way to incorporate these nutrient dense ingredients into your culinary life.
